Back in the early 1500’s in Paris, a vivid tapestry series, ‘La Dame à la Licorne’ came into existence, unveiling itself into the French medieval art world. Referred to as the ‘Mona Lisa of the Middle Ages’, it depicted a narrative of courtly love, seen through the six senses of a young and innocent court maiden. A tapestry series in rich rouges-hues, parlayed into an enchanting, romanticised world of animals, trees, and flowers.
Remaining on display in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, ‘La Dame à la Licorne’ is considered a masterpiece, largely due to its distinctive French ‘Mille-Fleurs’ tapestry design. Yet, it remains an utter mystery. Until today, no one yet knows of its origins, nor the meaning behind it. Yet, no one can deny its beauty and mystère.
Its meaning? Is surely up for debate. For centuries, art afficionados have surmised that ‘La Dame à la Licorne’ not only expresses symbolic scenes of aristocratic romance and a feast of the senses; but of an inner enlightenment, referred to as ‘À Mon Seul Désir’. Where our young muse passes over a knight in shining armour and her courtly gains: for something more than physical. Instead abandoning her previous identity in favour of an inner becoming: a purification within herself and her heart.
