There are some things that never go out of style. An evening between old friends, reminiscing over fond memories and spilling secrets over a bottle of wine or a moment of independent tranquillity as you indulge in some alone time, visiting galleries or popping into your favourite boutique. That spirit and the feeling have a name at Blue Illusion: Joie de vivre.
For almost three decades, that philosophy has guided every collection and every interaction shared. As we approach the 30th anniversary of opening our very first Boutique in Hampton, this is a moment to reflect on the values that have guided our journey. As our world changes and grows, the fashion world has equally reinvented itself countless times, but one thing has remained constant: a belief that style is about more than the clothes we wear. It's about how we live, how we connect, and how we find beauty and un petit peu de joie de vivre.
Our Beginning
What started as a dream for Danny and Donna Guest has now become a fashion empire that inspires women worldwide. Our brand is deeply inspired by the effortless elegance of France and grounded in Australian warmth. To the surprise of many, however, Blue Illusion began as a wholesale business in 1986, supplying unisex basics and après-ski wear. A thriving wholesale business, Blue Illusion was yet to take the leap into it’s first physical store.
After discovering a level of excellence in retail abroad in the US and Europe, Danny and Donna’s love affair with Le Pays de l’Amour inspired their drive to open their first boutique in 1998. Today, there are over 90 stores across Australia and New Zealand. Each one is transformed into provincial French emporiums, where effortless style meets the French charm, we know and love. They are more than just fashion stores but microcosms of our wider community, filled with beautiful designs and beautiful women seeking friendship and their own joie de vivre.
Blue Illusion has grown into a much-loved Australian lifestyle brand where French fashion sensibilities come together uniquely with the wealth of luxurious fabrics and Australian natural fibres. With designs perfect for parading around the provincial region or exploring Paris’s artistic district, we welcome you to fall in love with French style.
Our Family
Blue Illusion values naturally found their way into Danny and Donna’s children, most of whom now work for the brand. The family loves opening their arms to people from all walks of life and sharing their story with the Blue Illusion community.
Of course, it was a challenge juggling four children and a successful fashion brand, but Danny and Donna turned the Blue Illusion world into their children’s playground. Indiana remembers the smell of fabric being woven into their childhoods. The youngest, Zach and Shafaye, would turn cardboard boxes into forts and clothing rails into climbing frames. “It was part of our family routine; whenever we were going anywhere, we would visit the closest Blue Illusion store. We loved popping by to say “hello!” to the team. They were our extended family.”
Our Community
Fashion may be the thread that first draws women to Blue Illusion, but community is what keeps them coming back. Our community is a safe, welcoming space for women to empower each other and connect. Whether through boutique events, charitable partnerships or everyday interactions between stylists and customers, the brand has always believed that fashion is at its most meaningful when it brings people together.
Community is a founding pillar for our brand, and we honour the power of connection in everything that we do. Shafaye praises the sense of friendship within all Blue Illusion stores. “You can go to any store and see how much respect there is between the saleswoman and her customer. They’re friends who look after each other, and that’s something beautiful. I’m so proud that we’ve created these little pockets of community.”
Celebrating women is essential for our brand, after all, we’re a business created for women by women. We learn from the Blue Illusion woman every day. “She wants to feel special,” explains Indiana. “She wants to bring some joie de vivre to all aspects of her life!” All our pieces are designed to do the heavy lifting, so she can simply enjoy the feeling that comes with wearing them.
Our Icons
In 2012, our founders made it their mission to redefine the denim experience and debunk the notion that a good pair of jeans must come at an uncomfortable cost. This led to the revolutionary Bengajean®, crafted from the finest cotton to create an ultra-comfortable stretchy fabric that moves through life with you.
13 years later, and the Bengajean® eco-system has grown and will continue to do so, exploring different fits and styles to suit your mood. Even the late, great Iris Apfel agrees, “Bengajeans® are the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever worn!”
Our collaboration with the glorious Iris Apfel is one of our most iconic collaborations to date! It was an unforgettable opportunity to learn from one of fashion history’s greats. We wanted to celebrate women at every stage of their lives through a shared love for fashion and style. Upon meeting Iris, Donna was immediately struck by her fellow fashionista’s undeniable French essence and resonance with the brand.
We have always loved a Blue Illusion collaboration, not only to explore our collaborators' infinite creativity but also to expand the Blue Illusion world to new audiences. Australian television royalty, Catriona Rowntree and Chyka Keebaugh, are long-time collaborators and friends of Blue Illusion, sharing our values and act as source of empowerment for women across Australia.
The Future
As Blue Illusion looks towards the future, we are not driven by reinvention but by our enduring values and how they have grown to shape our wonderful brand into what it means for our community today.
For Indiana, the future is about enhancing those connections in thoughtful ways. "I want to continue embracing technology to enrich the customer journey and make every interaction more personal and more meaningful."
Shafaye wants to welcome new generations into our story while honouring the women who have been part of it since our beginning. "Blue Illusion has the power to transcend generations," she reflects. "We see mothers introducing their daughters to the brand and friendships formed through our community. I hope we can continue dressing women through every stage of life, while inspiring a new generation to discover Blue Illusion."
Joie de vivre remains the guiding thread – expressed through every collection, every boutique experience and every meaningful connection with its community. “Blue Illusion has the cherish factor,” says Indiana. “We want the Blue Illusion experience to be one where everyone feels cherished, valued, and is given that touch of joy.”
Perhaps that is the true meaning of joie de vivre. It’s not found in a single piece of clothing or even a milestone anniversary. It's found in the moments we create together, in the friendships formed over lifetimes, the confidence discovered when we throw on our favourite dress, the laughter shared between generations and the warmth of feeling truly seen.
