The French Linen Story
Nestled amongst the picturesque French countryside are the green and gold fields of flax farms. It’s here that the cultivation process for flax, the plant that gives us French linen, begins. Flax is a plant species grown especially for its seeds and fibres. The fibres are harvested, spun and processed to make French linen fabric. Over time the steps for constructing French linen have been perfected to create what is now considered to be one of the world’s most sustainable and high-quality textiles.
The first recorded mention of French linen dates back to the 9th century when Charlemagne's biographer wrote about the Emperor's gift of a piece of French linen to Pope Leo III. During the Middle Ages, French towns specialising in linen production sprang up all over the country. Known as les villes de linge or linen cities, these towns are still known for their beautiful and quality linen today.
Our Care Tips for Washing Linen
Pure French linen wears exceptionally well thanks to its natural antibacterial, breathable, and moisture-wicking qualities. Because 100% linen stays fresher for longer, it requires fewer washes, which maintains the quality of your linen and is more sustainable.
Below are our tips on how to further preserve this beautiful fabric.
How to machine wash linen
Machine wash on the gentle cycle using low to medium temperatures and a gentle detergent. Choose a low spin speed, and don’t over-fill the machine to minimise wrinkling.
How to hand wash linen
Fill a bowl with mildly soapy water, using a gentle detergent, and press areas to remove stains. Avoid scrubbing the fabric. Rinse with clean, lukewarm water and gently roll in a towel to remove moisture.
How to dry linen
Air dry or tumble dry on low. To preserve the colour of dark linens, dry them indoors while they’re damp.
