5 Chic Ways to Style a Silk Scarf in Your Hair

Coiffures avec un foulard (silk-scarf hairstyles) are everywhere in France, but this effortlessly elegant trend is as timeless as it is chic.

Icons like Brigitte Bardot famously rocked the look and even Christian Dior described silk scarves as the ideal accessory to enhance a woman.

Mais bien sûr, they’re versatile, élégant, and easily elevate a simple bun, braid, or classic ponytail, perfect for busy mornings, romantic evenings, or a casual café with friends.

Read on for our favori ways to style this bel accessoire.

1. The Classic Pony

C'est simple, tie your hair into a loose low or mid ponytail and wrap your scarf around it twice, or more until you have the length you want.

Depending on the width, you can either tie it as is for a nonchalant, flowy look, or fold it for something more structured. Tying the knot on top or under your ponytail will also offer different effects.

2. The Low Bun

This trend is so elegant paired with statement earrings. First, style your hair into a low bun using a hair tie and secure it with pins. Pull up some strands gently for a soft messy effect.

Start by folding your scarf in half diagonally, then begin to roll or fold it into a long rectangle. Wrap the folded scarf around your bun a few times to get your desired length before tying it into a knot either above or below your bun, allowing some of the scarf to drape down, et voilà!

3. The Elevated Pleat

Rapide et facile à faire, simply separate your hair into strands and place the scarf behind your hair, wrapped around a small section. Pleat your hair normally using the scarf as one of the strands of the braid.

For an alternate approach, tie your hair into a low ponytail and slide the folded scarf through the hairband until it is evenly draped on top of your hair. Then, divide your hair into three and pleat normally bringing the scarf into one or two of your strands.

4. The Twist Headband

A personal favourite, this style offers a little added je ne sais quoi that just elevates it from a simple headband. Simply fold the scarf to your desired width and slide the scarf under your hair, adjusting so that both slides are equal length.

Lift the strands over your head, bring them together, and then twist them at your crown. Bring them back down underneath your hair and secure them into a knot. This is another style that looks très chic with small hoops or bold studs, like the Chyka Teardrop Earrings.

5. The Brigitte Bardot

This tutorial wouldn’t be complete without Brigitte Bardot’s iconic look from Godard’s 1963 film Contempt. A sultry play on the classic headband, this version features a thicker band and rests along the hairline, stylishly framing the face.

Start by folding your scarf into a thicker rectangle and then drape it over your head so that the front covers or sits just behind your hairline. Wrap the sides over your ears and tie securely under your hair in a knot. Juste comme ça!

A silk scarf in your hair is a beautiful way to tailor your outfit with minimum effort and maximum appeal. To make the most impact, we recommend choosing a scarf that either matches your top or pants, highlighting one element of your look.
