Donna's Jolly Holiday Crackers

Donna's Jolly Holiday Crackers

'Tis the season for crafting! With seven grandchildren, crafting is essential to keeping the little ones busy over the holiday. It’s also a beautiful way to get their creative juices flowing and build lasting memories as a family.

These Christmas crackers are one of our préférés crafts because they’re so easy to make and mostly require items already in the house this time of year.

All you need are these merry materials:

  • Toilet paper rolls

  • Festive paper

  • Ribbons

  • Cracker snaps (optional)

First, score the toilet paper rolls to make them easier to crack. Then, line up three toilet paper rolls in a row and use them to measure your festive paper so that it covers all three rolls. You can also use a cracker snap to measure the length of the paper if you use one.

Once your paper is measured and cut, wrap it around the rolls and tape it lengthwise to create a long cylinder. Keep the middle roll in the centre while pulling the left roll slightly out of the cylinder. Slowly press down and twist that end of the paper against the centre roll.

Continue slowly pushing and turning until you’ve created a small twist that separates the left roll from the centre roll. Tie the twisted section with a ribbon to close off that end, then remove the left paper roll.

Finally, fill your Christmas cracker with tiny treasures of your choosing. When you’re ready, twist and tie the right side in the same way as the left.  On Christmas day, open with a jolly pull on both ends of the cracker!

And there you have it! You’re ready to upcycle those humble toilet rolls into something special and one-of-a-kind.

Happy crafting!
